Role(yakuwari)

The word yakuwari is thought to have been derived from a drama term yakugara (part)&sbquo and means a profile or characteristic (personality) feature of a person within a story. Its definition was extended from there to include assigned positions at work&sbquo and the conditions and allotment of qualifications and responsibilities (duties) in real society. It is synonymous to yakume as it relates to actions and behavior in social life. It's structure highlights individual characteristics as a member of a group or organization established by a system comprising a series of actions based on relationships with others. It has been debated in various ways whether a role (yakuwari) rises spontaneously from an individual or is given by society. In my view&sbquo despite such measures as moratoriums that seem as if a delay in fulfilling the role is tolerated mentally and encourage abdication of the role in social life&sbquo the social system seems to be making their rationale ambiguous. When we look at the mutual relationship of the role of design or designing a role&sbquo examination of the division and role of the profession of design becomes extremely important. Such examination can be conducted through the following three stages. First&sbquo establish social recognition of design&sbquo or position the role of the profession of design&sbquo to define its role. Next&sbquo differentiate the profession of design&sbquo and clearly investigate the process of design becoming more diverse an heterogeneous in the relationships of art and design&sbquo industry and design&sbquo and culture an design. Then&sbquo assess how the responsibility as a role of design and design rights are generated in its relationships with society and the times. The social consciousness of division of work&sbquo that is the role (yakuwari)&sbquo turns&sbquo as is&sbquo into the duty (yakume) that accompanies social obligation and rights. In other words&sbquo I believe when the role and duty of design is given a clear definition and theory&sbquo the recognition of design in society will deepen.
