In daily usage&sbquo the term roka refers to the increase in ill effects that occurs with the advancement of years. Aging phenomena are defined medically based on 4 criteria: 1) Universality = phenomena that occur in all life forms. 2) Intrinsically = the process of birth&sbquo growth&sbquo aging and death are equally intrinsic in all individual organisms. 3) Progressivity = aging can be understood as a process of change. 4) Harmfulness = deterioration of function as a result of aging cannot be avoided&sbquo and its degree can also be objectively recognized from appearance. Such change in appearance&sbquo in particular&sbquo as a height and weight&sbquo cases of losing hair and teeth&sbquo and cases of changes in skin condition and of such symptoms as a cataracts&sbquo are caused by the deterioration of physiological functions due to progression of the internal organs&sbquo and hence weight loss&sbquo that constitutes their foundation. The deterioration of functions due to aging is the molecular biology as senescence genes. "Aging" as rhetoric meaning "deterioration of functions and breakdown of adaptability" is now used extensively in such domains as organizations&sbquo machines&sbquo systems and even social and political systems. In Japan&sbquo the aging society is progressing on a scale of seen nowhere else in the world&sbquo and people avoiding the use of such discriminatory expressions as roka. Instead&sbquo there are such phrases as koreika shakai (society that is becoming elderly) and korei shakai (elderly society) are different&sbquo but I should point out that while these are definitively different&sbquo the difference is being ignored. Koreika shakai and kourei shakai are different. It's no exaggeration to say that our Japanese system&sbquo so confused as to even distinguishing the use of these phrases&sbquo itself is aging. So-called universal design too has been introduced without making a distinction between Koreika shakai and Korei shakai&sbquo and is being spread through society as if it constituted the essence of design. This may be a sign or aging or deterioration of the design world.
