Lamgage(Langue and Parole)
Lamgage was coined by linguist Sassure to define languages. It may be said that a language is the most powerful tool to communicate and a great cultural asset for an ethnic group. Saussure first reinterpreted as lamgage&sbquo the overall act of speaking and listening "as is" as the "language activity". The meaning and content of words as a common language of an ethnic group&sbquo however&sbquo is complicated to outsiders unless the ethnic groups are within the same language group. He then thought it was necessary to reconsider "language activity" from its contradicting duality to examine it as a comprehensive "linguistics" rather than a cultural asset of a single ethnic group. As a result&sbquo he came up with a dichotomous concept and definition of langue and parole. First&sbquo langue is a system of language that most of those in the ethnic group can comprehend the meaning of and use universally as a "dictionary". Parole&sbquo on the other hand&sbquo is a term that can be defined as a "conversational word" that is so to speak "colloquial"&sbquo shared only within the group even in the same ethnic group&sbquo and cannot be comprehended by those outside that group. When this colloquial term becomes universal to the entire ethnic group&sbquo it will eventually be included in the "dictionary" and become a part of langue. Moreover&sbquo there are cases in which words in the langue possessed different meanings and appeared in conversations. Saussure defined this mutuality and contrariness as lamgage (langue+parole). The definition of the word has been expanded and even applied to fields outside linguistics.
The langue in design&sbquo for example&sbquo can be said to be the universal and systematic forms that can be comprehended generally. Forms that are accepted only by the tastes and sense of values of a certain group are considered as the parole&sbquo and their design background and philosophy can also be said to be the parole. Therefore&sbquo it is considered that parole thinking is essential to give birth to new forms and functionality through design. A certain design strategy&sbquo however&sbquo that transforms them to the langue is absolutely necessary for parole design to be understood. This means that there are also langue and parole in the formative language of design activities.
