Sketch

This word originated from the Greek sketchy&sbquo which meant "something done instantly." In English the meaning expanded to include drawings&sbquo sketches&sbquo rough sketches&sbquo nature sketches&sbquo outlines of incidents&sbquo small pieces in literary works&sbquo and short skits and plays in theater. Among these examples the word "drawing" in particular is given a more detailed classification. An impromptu drawing can be a rough nature drawing of something that actually exists&sbquo or a very quick depiction of something one freely imagined without recourse to an actual object. A sketch in design is generally a monochromatic&sbquo line-drawn expression or the drawing of an image that exists only in one's imagination. Renaissance painter Cennino Centnini said&sbquo "The foundation of art is drawing (desegno in Italian) and coloring." Drawing upon this definition of art&sbquo L.B.Alberti claimed that the three major elements of paintings are contour lines&sbquo composition&sbquo and the depiction of light (shading)&sbquo and stressed the importance of lines (contour lines)&sbquo the boundaries between space and objects&sbquo as the most fundamental of the three. Later on&sbquo through the work of Piero della Francesca&sbquo line drawing became the foundation of a painting methodology that organized space geometrically into perspective drawings. Leonardo da Vinci later advocated a consciousness that focused not on lines but the "phenomenal grasp of light and shadow." In this way of thinking it is not the line that captures an object in space. Rather&sbquo our awareness of an object is evoked by something unseen in the light and shadow&sbquo by our "sprit" in other words. Regarding this expression of spirituality evoked by the concept of drawing&sbquo Michelangelo went as far as to claim that he kept his compass in his eye. As can be seen in these Renaissance views on art&sbquo the Italian word disegnare&sbquo meaning "drawing" or "sketch&sbquo" had an extremely close association with designare&sbquo the root word for design. It is also clear from history that the sketch is important as a design method.
