Product
Products are items made by hand or with tools that artificially process materials or ingredients. By "artificial process" I mean any process of making&sbquo crafting&sbquo manufacturing or fabricating&sbquo and producing. The structure of such processing becomes more and more complicated&sbquo step by step&sbquo depending on the materials used&sbquo production methods adopted and the persons employed. The word seisaku (making) means to make something with simple tools. Another word with the same pronunciation but written with a different characters&sbquo seisaku (crafting)&sbquo requires more skill in handling and processing materials than the former seisaku (making). The word seizo (manufacturing or fabricating) relies on a systematic division of labor and involves both subtractive processes such as shaving off material and additive processes such as combining different materials. The industrial revolution began the integration of "making things from the production stage" into the very structure of society. Things that are made or manufactured in these ways are called "products." Assuming that products are the medium for satisfying consumer needs demonstrated by the market rather than merely the result of ''making things&sbquo" we should not think of them as limited to tangible&sbquo physical entities. It is now possible to products an expanded definition to include comprehensive&sbquo intangible concepts that respond to the needs of the consumer. In other words&sbquo "product'' no longer refers only to physical things; commercially structured information itself can also be called a product. We should rather pay attention to the difference between products and merchandise. For example&sbquo product development should only imply development within the structure of ''making things." Development of merchandise&sbquo however&sbquo can mean the development of a salable medium for distribution in the market. Today&sbquo however&sbquo things that can be called a medium are also defined as products.
