The word culture is derived from the Latin word cultus&sbquo which means "cultivation&sbquo farming&sbquo care and breeding&sbquo" but if we trace it back to the Latin word culter&sbquo which is the root of cultis&sbquo we arrive at such meanings as "knife&sbquo harrow and spade&sbquo" I firmly believe that this original meaning that indicates these things essentially governs the definition of the English word culture In japanese&sbquo bunka means "spiritual activities in general that realize the ideals of mankind" from "a state in which clothes&sbquo food and housing are manageable&sbquo and the living standard is raised = bunmei (civilization)&sbquo" and that state includes the state of mind and lifestyles of human beings in general Therefore&sbquo bunka is a concept that contains the life and death of human beings and their entire lives&sbquo and integrates their worldview. Thus&sbquo the definition of bunka has been sought in various areas&sbquo fields and from various viewpoints Consolidating all these definitions&sbquo bunka would be a complete projection of a system symbolized by realistic and imaginative life experiences of human beings These life experiences are&sbquo to no small extent&sbquo shared due to the social nature of a community&sbquo and include experiences involving nature&sbquo other human beings&sbquo and concepts The activities themselves that symbolize these experiences take various forms corresponding to the diversity of signals used therein The issue of to-day&sbquo therefore&sbquo is what mechanism or function culture fulfills in society = people and their community&sbquo or the age&sbquo rather than what culture is That is&sbquo we must consider it as a theme or concept that leads to the awareness towards human existence Given the above factors&sbquo design can achieve three functions or effects for culture or a cultural system First&sbquo a formative embodiment that extends conceptually through design expression is important for cognitive problem solving regarding a certain event Next&sbquo it is possible to build a certain sensitive receptor system with social nature through that design expression Moreover&sbquo it will be necessary to aim at commoditizing senses of system and ethics or sense of value through that design expression in order to have an evaluative consciousness for improving the quality of such life experiences These should be called "cultural strategies through design" or "design of cultural strategies".
