Yasuragi is indispensable mentally&sbquo psychologically&sbquo and physically to today's human beings. Although the word indicates a physical&sbquo physiological resting state&sbquo and ultimately&sbquo the death of a human being as its final expression&sbquo its mental and psychological meaning has great power for human beings in today's society. People today live under various stresses. It is also scientifically and medically proven that such stresses could eventually cause physical abnormalities and illnesses. "Attaining peace of mind" means "to be mentally rich&sbquo relaxed and calm." As suggested by the phrase (in Japanese) "a moment of relaxation&sbquo" the human being can actually attain such a state temporarily. Iyashi(healing)&sbquo a method of attaining this relaxation&sbquo has become indispensable for human living. The meaning of iyashi includes accessing the mind and body to draw out vitality and self-healing power to promote healing and recovery. In order to secure this "moment of relaxation&sbquo" liberation from tension&sbquo pressure&sbquo and oppression becomes necessary.
Accordingly&sbquo the design of items intended to generate relaxation and heating are required to reactivate vitality and self-healing power. In this case&sbquo however&sbquo if priority is placed on mentality and psychology&sbquo a bias will occur in favor of unscientific and parascientific methods&sbquo and an association with superstitions and fortune-telling. In other words&sbquo there is an extremely strong possibility that design will end up becoming merely a method to stimulate "the desire to attain relaxation." Design must not forget it has the responsibility and duty to clarify and elucidate in its concept its objective&sbquo rational and scientific optimality and feasibility. While it is clear that the design solution for yasuragi brings industrial and economic effect&sbquo I believe it is incumbent upon the designer's professional ethics to clarify that design itself in essence is inseparable from yasuragi.
