Material (sozai)
Sozai originally meant pieces of roughly chopped&sbquo unfinished wood. From this basic meaning it evolved into a word that indicates materials in general. Along with meaning "source (so) of material (zai)&sbquo "sozai also has a deeper meaning when the nature of the material is clear. Take cooking for example. In the expression "to make the best use of the ingredients (sozai)&sbquo" the word points to the natural taste of the ingredients. Stemming from its use in regards to materials and ingredients&sbquo sozai is recently being used to refer to the subjects of artwork and expressive activity. Materials for expression are physical matters that actually exist and also sources of imagination. The character and nature of these materials can also be included in the meaning of sozai.
