Bigaku is a field of philosophy. Bigaku is the Japanese translation of the German word asthetik. As to its academic lineage&sbquo it originated when the German philosopher Baumgarten applied the German word astetik&sbquo which means sensory perception&sbquo to sensation and sensibility as subordinate perception as contrasted with reason as super ordinate perception&sbquo and established aesthetics as the science of sensory recognition from there. I would like to outline the basic systematic structure of aesthetics. Aesthetics can stand separated from the self that recognizes the scientific mindset and moral standards. Since&sbquo however&sbquo recognition of beauty can be clearly grasped precisely within the relationship with the bodily self&sbquo philosophical issues become involved. That is&sbquo while there is a tensile relation between the subject and object to establish beauty&sbquo it seems impossible to grasp the subject-object relationship itself before one can evaluate the value of beauty. It has been thought&sbquo however&sbquo that the structure of the aesthetic experience that establishes beauty can be stated objectively as a universal matter. For insight into the aesthetic realm&sbquo a tight mutual relationship between philosophical thinking and scientific observation is required. Furthermore&sbquo what is contained in aesthetics also includes science of literature&sbquo art&sbquo and music. As to design&sbquo a field that may be called design aesthetics must be built. I firmly believe this will be the basic structure of an aesthetics that allows explicit recognition of the relationship between the subject and object of beauty. This is because by philosophizing the relationship between the result of design and such elements as people&sbquo society and nature&sbquo it will be possible to incorporate design aesthetics into a philosophical system and at the same time re-evaluate the root principles of design that creates beauty&sbquo Rational interpretation of individual aesthetic phenomenon generated by design&sbquo I believe&sbquo leads to the ideal form of the profession of design.
